Do I need a DOT number for a cargo van?
Checked October 2026
The short answer: most cargo van drivers who work inside one state, with a cargo van under the federal weight line, need no US DOT number. Three things can change that: the weight of your loaded cargo van, crossing state lines for hire, and what you haul.
The weight line
The federal line is 10,001 pounds — the weight rating of your vehicle, loaded setup counted the way the rule counts it. A cargo van or sprinter van at or over that line, used in business across state lines, needs a DOT number. Most single cargo vans running local courier work sit under the line.
State lines
Work inside one state is state business, and most states do not ask a small cargo van for a DOT number. Cross state lines for hire — carrying other people's goods for pay — and federal rules step in. That is when a DOT number, and sometimes operating authority, enter the picture even for a cargo van.
DOT number and MC number are not the same thing
- A DOT number is an identity number. It says who you are, so your safety record can be tracked.
- An MC number is operating authority. It is permission to carry other people's goods for hire across state lines.
Drivers mix these two up every day. They are two different doors.
When a company asks for one anyway
Some companies ask every driver for a DOT number as their own house rule, even when the law does not. That is their call. If the work is good, getting the number is free from the federal website and takes minutes — the hard part is keeping the file behind it in order.
Driving for a company
If you run under a company's authority, you run under their numbers, not yours. The company in this book will tell you which way they work when you reach them.
