Cargo van insurance cost — what drives the price

Checked October 2026

The short answer: insurance for delivery work costs far more than insurance for a family car, and the range is wide — published prices run from about $2,400 to about $15,000 for a year of cover. Two drivers who look the same on paper can get prices thousands apart. Here is why.

What drives the price

  • New work costs more. A driver new to delivery work pays a new-driver surcharge — sellers of insurance put it at roughly 15 to 25 percent on top.
  • What you carry. Medical loads, freight for big companies, and high-value goods ask for more cover than small parcels.
  • How far you run. City-only work prices lower than work that crosses state lines.
  • Your record. Tickets and crashes raise the price like they do on any vehicle.
  • The state you live in. The same driver pays a different price in a different state. There is no way around that one.

The words on a quote, in plain English

  • Liability — pays for harm you cause to other people and their property.
  • Cargo cover — pays for the goods inside your cargo van if they are lost or damaged.
  • $100,000 / $300,000 — you will see numbers like these, in pairs or triples. They are the most the policy pays per crash and in total. Bigger numbers mean a bigger price.

What companies ask you to carry

Each company that gives out work says what cover it asks its drivers to carry. Some print a number — cargo cover of $100,000 is a common one. Some ask for more. That is the company's call, and they will tell you when you reach them.

One honest line about this book: our cards do not carry insurance numbers. Insurance is not our job. We give you the company and the person to call — the company tells you what it asks for, in its own words, and your insurance agent prices it.
