26-foot box truck work — who hires it and what it looks like

Checked October 2026

The short answer: the 26-foot box truck is the standard size of the contract delivery world. Final-mile carriers, furniture and appliance firms, expedited carriers, moving companies, and Amazon Relay all build their hiring around it. If you are buying one truck for contract work, this is the size that opens the most doors.

Why 26 feet became the standard

It is the biggest box you can drive without a CDL — most 26-foot delivery trucks are rated at exactly 26,000 pounds or just under. It takes full pallets through a dock door, two rooms of furniture, or a store's worth of boxed freight, and it still parks at a curb. Companies standardized on it because one size means any driver on the roster can take any route.

Who hires it

  • Final-mile carriers — daily routes out of a warehouse, paid per route, per stop, or per day.
  • Furniture and appliance firms — two-person delivery and install work, paid per day or per stop.
  • Expedited carriers — per-mile freight, any hour, often over the road; the 26-foot truck is their core vehicle.
  • Moving companies — per job or per day, seasonal peaks in summer.
  • Amazon Relay — the 26-foot with a liftgate is one of only two box sizes Relay accepts.
  • LTL terminals and distributors — local pickup-and-delivery and overflow routes.

What it must carry to qualify

A working liftgate — tuck-under for Relay, any strong gate for most local work. A pallet jack. Blankets, straps, and a hand truck for furniture work. A dock plate if your routes load at docks. Companies ask about the gate and the jack in the first minute of the first call; our requirements guide lists the full set.

The money shape

Route work pays steady, moderate money — a day rate or route rate you can plan a week around. Expedited work pays the strongest per-mile money and the least predictable hours. Furniture work adds tips and helper pay to the day. The drivers who last in a 26-foot truck usually stack one steady shape (routes) with one strong shape (expedited or furniture weekends) and let boards fill the seams. Our money guides work through the arithmetic in plain numbers.
